Feel Good Friday: Philanthropic Physical Education

I hated gym class as a kid. I fully admit that I am an “indoorsy” person – I’d rather read a book than go on a hike, and there was nothing worse in my mind than forced team sports with a bunch of kids I hated.

But I might as liked gym class if I was a student at Alternative Learning Center in Dubuque, Iowa. The school is giving Phys Ed credit to students who volunteer to do yard work for elderly and disabled residents in their community.

It’s only for the last two weeks of school, and according to teacher Tim Hitzler, the students aren’t actually all the psyched about it…in the beginning.

“The students aren’t typically too excited at the beginning but once they get involved and start doing the yard work they become more motivated. What they really like is A: helping people. They really like giving back to people and meeting the person.”

How cool is that? Getting outside and doing some physical activity while actually helping people and getting school credit for it? Love it.
