This Week In Ridiculous Holidays: June 17th – June 23rd

There’s a whole lot of holidays this week that I frankly had no idea what they were, so my friend and yours Google is providing a lot of the content in this week’s column. Let’s get to it, shall we?

Monday, June 17, 2019

Global Garbage Man Day

Unsung heroes.

National Eat Your Vegetables Day

This should probably be every day, right?

National Stewart’s Root Beer Day

“Originating in 1924 in Mansfield Ohio, Stewart’s Fountain Classics were a brand of old-fashioned fountain sodas.  They are a brand of premium soft drinks made in the United States. Founded by Frank Stewart, he set up his first drive-in root beer stand to supplement his income as a school teacher.” I don’t like root beer, but good for him.

National Apple Strudel Day

There are a great many apple desserts out there and I’ve got to be honest, I’m not actually sure what strudel is.

National Cherry Tart Day

As previously stated, I’m not a big fan of cherries, no pass.

Tuesday, June 18, 2019

National Go Fishing Day

I don’t like fishing, but I’d still rather do that than go to work.

National Splurge Day

Pretty stealthy to put this on a Tuesday when I’m at work and can’t go shopping.

Wednesday, June 19, 2019

National FreeBSD Day

“FreeBSD is a free and open-source Unix-like operating system descended from the Berkeley Software Distribution, which was based on Research Unix.” This needs a holiday?

National Garfield the Cat Day

He sleeps a lot and loves lasagna. I’m a big fan.

Juneteenth

“Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.” Yeah, I probably should have known that one.

National Martini Day

Blech.

National Watch Day

Number of watches I own? +10. Number of days I wear a watch? 0.

Thursday, June 20, 2019

National Kouign Amann Day

“Kouign amann is a round crusty cake, made with a yeast-raised dough containing layers of butter and sugar folded in, similar in fashion to puff pastry or croissants but with fewer layers.” I’ve never had it but it sounds amazing.

International Nystagmus Day

“Nystagmus is a condition where the eyes move rapidly and uncontrollably.” I’ve also never had this but it sounds much worse.

American Eagle Day

The store or the national symbol?

National Hike with a Geek Day

I don’t hike. Period.

National Vanilla Milkshake Day

Boring but delicious.

National Ice Cream Soda Day

Eh.

National Dump the Pump Day

“On the third Thursday in June, National Dump the Pump encourages people to ride public transportation instead of driving and save money.” Good cause, but public transportation here sucks so I’ll be rolling in my Murano.

Friday, June 21, 2019

National Peaches ‘N’ Cream Day

Honestly, why is this week full of crappy desserts?

National Day of the Gong

“National Day of the Gong on June 21 honors and celebrates the Gong’s unique history and capacities among instruments of sound, music, creativity and healing.” Okie dokie.

Go Skateboarding Day

Which would also be “break an arm” day for me.

National Daylight Appreciation Day

Which is good because it’s the longest day of the year!

National Selfie Day

I cannot take selfies due to be afflicted with short arms, but have fun celebrating.

National Arizona Day

Fun fact: The bola tie is the official state neckwear of Arizona.

National Take Back the Lunch Break Day

Honestly, this is a good idea. We get one hour of freedom in the middle of the workday and we should take it back.

National Seashell Day

Pretty at the beach, not so much in decorations.

Summer Begins

Does it really matter when you aren’t in school anymore?

Take Your Dog to Work Day

I love puppers in the office!

Saturday, June 22, 2019

National Chocolate Eclair Day

Not one of my favorite desserts.

National HVAC Tech Day

The saviors of summer.

National Onion Rings Day

More of a fan of the strings than the rings, but who am I to turn ‘em down?

Sunday, June 23, 2019

National Pink Day

Shouldn’t this be a Wednesday?

National Hydration Day

But having this on a Sunday makes perfect sense.

National Pecan Sandies Day

In the middle of my cookie rankings, but still respectable.
